All You Need To Know About Durian Preservation
In Southeast Asia, durian is a famous tropical fruit. It contains excellent flesh that is rich in nutrients. It is best eaten as fresh fruit from the regional supermarket. This fruit is quite popular among the Thai people. Durian has a very strong smell. For instance, if you keep it in a corner of a room, its smell will spread over the entire house.
So, durian preservation (การ เก็บ ทุเรียน, which is the term in Thai) must be done properly, so that even it is kept in the fridge, it doesn’t spread its strong smell and affects the other food products. If you can make proper storing arrangements, then durian can be stored for a long time.
How Can You Store Durian?
If you haven’t peeled off or cut a durian then you can preserve it for over a month. But, you should avoid keeping durian at a warm temperature. Also, keep it away from the place where sunlight reaches because it will make the durian ripen.
The cabinet is the ideal place to put them because it is cold and dry. An open durian can last for just about 5 days. If you store durian in a refrigerator, then it can last for about 2 months.
What Are The Steps To Refrigerate Durian?
As durian spoils easily and quickly, durian preservation is essential. You can refrigerate it to avoid making it lose its nutritional value. The steps to refrigerate durian are as follows:
- Step 1 – Firstly, you have to cut open the durian and take the flesh out of it. You can wear gloves during the process.
- Step 2 – Now put the cut-out flesh on a plate. You can keep the seeds inside when you refrigerate it as it holds the flesh firmly. Now transfer the flesh to a dry and air-tight container. Don’t pile up the durians over one another and try to place the durians next to each of them.
- Step 3 – Now put on the lid of the air-tight container and seal it completely so that no air can pass. Then put the container in your freezer for durian preservation.
When you wish to have it, simply take it out from the freezer and place it inside the fridge to let it defrost. After 4 to 5 hours, take the container out of the fridge and serve it on a plate. It will take a little bit of time to thaw at room temperature.
