Identifying 5 Common Tools in an Electrician’s Toolkit

Electricians have a lot of responsibilities and they employ various tools by which to execute those responsibilities. When they hear about a potential issue and make their way into a space, whether it’s high up on a ladder or in a damp cellar, the last thing they want is to be where they need to be without the tools that they need to solve the problem. Most electricians will carry similar items in their toolkits because they are the tools that address the most common electrical issues that come up.

1. Electrical Tape

It’s good for an awful lot of fixes. If you’re thinking electrical tools and equipment, you’re definitely including this dynamic tape. Electrical tape is efficient because it is pressure-sensitive and self-adhesive. It is also resistant to moisture, heat and abrasion. One specific use of electrical tape is to insulate wires.

2. Voltage Tester

These are critical to the job as they are the device used to test whether an electric current is running through a wire or other piece of electrical equipment. They’re used to test junction boxes, cabling, and switches. Non-contact voltage testers and neon voltage testers are two types of common voltage testers.

3. Hacksaw

It might not be very subtle, but the reason that the hacksaw is the saw of choice is because of its ability to cut through metal. Hacksaws are small, typically featuring 12-inch blades, though smaller models exist. The small blades are easily replaceable when dulled or broken.

4. Wire Strippers

This tool is used to strip away the outer coating of a wire so that the electrician can access the central core. Sometimes called cable strippers, there are several types, particular to different situations.

5. Insulated Screwdrivers

These are used to open electrical containers. The insulation ensures protection against any live electrical equipment. Like much electrical gear, safety, as well as function, are the salient aspects of these tools.

Carrying the right tools means less labor. It’s working smarter, not harder, to accomplish a task. It also speaks to experience and the wisdom to know what a given job requires.
