How To Control Your Anger

Anger is a basic emotion that everybody experiences at times. However, it can become a problem when you let it build up inside you or you direct it toward another person. You can take actions to curb and control your anger, though. Online anger management courses and other forms of counseling can help. You can also help yourself by practicing a few anger management tips.

Don’t Speak Too Quickly

If you’re involved in a heated confrontation with another person, take a moment to think about what you want to say. Otherwise, you might say something you’ll regret later. It’s a good idea to give the other person some time to do the same.

Once you have calmed down, voice your concerns clearly, directly, and non-confrontationally, without malice toward the other person. Always be respectful and non-controlling.

Take Care of Yourself

Exercise and relaxation helps reduce the stress that can lead to anger. If you feel your anger coming on, go outside, take a walk, jog, or involve yourself in some other physical activity that you like. Or just give yourself some quite time away from the situation that’s bringing on the stress. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditating, deep-breathing, or listening to music.

Stay Positive

Maintain a positive attitude and look for the good in less than ideal situations. Don’t harbor negative feelings and keep your expectations realistic. Don’t expect things to always go the way you want them to. Smile and laugh more. Know that this is a crazy world and things go wrong.

Seek Help

If you cannot gain control over your anger, then don’t be afraid to seek help. Letting your anger go unchecked can lead to personal health issues and unhealthy relationships.

You can’t escape getting angry, but you can deal with your anger in positive ways. You owe it to yourself, your family, and your friends.
